Fire season is here, and emergency officials are warning of a hot and dangerous summer.
Sabrina Drill, UC Cooperative Extension's natural resources advisor, offers the Sustainable and Fire Safe Landscapes program to Los Angeles County residents. The program provides information and tips on how to prepare homes for fire season by creating defensible space, developing sustainable and fire-safe landscapes, and reducing fire hazards.
The program is a collaboration between the University of California Cooperative Extension, the Los Angeles County Fire Department Forestry Division, the National Park Service and numerous other public and business organizations.
Fire preparation starts at the structure by using fire-resistant building materials, eliminating openings where embers can enter and keeping roofs clear of flammable debris. Beyond that, choosing the right plants and making sure those plants are spaced properly and maintained can significantly improve a home's chance of surviving a fire.
"There is no way to completely ensure that your home will not be exposed to wildfire. If you live in the wildland-urban interface (WUI) area, it is not a question of if a fire will occur, but when," said Drill. "Preparation for wildfire requires that you take responsibility for your safety, property and pets in the event of a fire," she added.
